Are You Really Pregnant?

Are You Really Pregnant?
If you have been sexually active and are concerned about being pregnant, turn to us first. BWPCC has specially trained staff who really care about you. Services are always compassionate and confidential. You are not alone.
Pregnancy Symptoms
A missed period is the most common sign but it doesn't necessarily mean you are pregnant. Some other common pregnancy symptoms are:

  • frequent urination
  • nausea
  • breast tenderness or enlargement
  • dizziness
  • change of appetite

How accurate is the test?
Our tests are lab-quality high-sensitivity urine pregnancy tests. They can detect the HCG pregnancy hormone as early as 7 days after conception or 21 to 24 days after the first day of your last period. In normal pregnancy, HCG, the hormone present during pregnancy, doubles in quantity approximately every two days.

Generally, these pregnancy tests are up to 99% accurate (when taken according to manufacturer's instructions) The test:

  • can be taken before you miss your period
  • is done in a clinical and private setting
  • results will be known during your appointment

A positive pregnancy test (including those taken at home) suggests a high probability that you are pregnant. However, the result should be confirmed by an ultrasound exam.

All services at BWPCC are provided on-site and offer same day results with no further obligation.

Can I have a retest if my test is negative and my period doesn't start?
Yes, you may be rescheduled for another test in the following week or two. The hCG hormone doubles every 72 hours during the early weeks of pregnancy so it is possible to have a negative test initally and a positive test a few days later.
Should I see a doctor if I have a second negative test and have not started my period?
Many things can contribute to an irregular menstrual cycle. If you have concerns about missed periods and your pregnancy test continues to be negative, you should see your health care provider for a checkup. If you need resources for health care, BWPCC can give you referrals.
ULTRASOUND
Even if you have had a positive pregnancy test, it is important to have the test verified with an ultrasound exam. A good way to determine if you will miscarry is through an ultrasound exam. Making a decision you feel good about includes getting all the information you need. If you are considering abortion, you'll be provided with a state-of-the-art ultrasound (you will need an ultrasound prior to an abortion) free of charge. And unlike some facilities, you will be allowed to see the results of the scan.
An ultrasound can help answer the following questions:

  • Is the pregnancy located where it should be (in the uterus and not the fallopian tube)?
  • Do we see what we would expect to see in a healthy early pregnancy since the miscarriage rate in early pregnancy is about 1 in 4?
  • Is there fetal cardiac activity?

BWPCC can provide an ultrasound for you at no charge and with no further obligation provided that you meet the guidelines set by our medical director. The ultrasound may confirm the pregnancy or it may indicate a likelihood of the pregnancy ending naturally by miscarriage.
